Second First Impressions - Sally Thorne

Mrs Furneaux

Firstly, am I the only one who can see Lucy Hale playing the adorable, “tidy girl” Ruthie in Sally Thornes latest novel?

Having loved The Hating Game, I couldn’t resist an ARC of Sally Thornes latest book Second First Impressions. Featuring the charismatic ‘Parloni Sisters’, our conservative Ruthie, a rogue bad boy Teddy and some cute golden-shelled tortoises, its easy to rhetorically ask “Whats not to love”?!

Admittedly Ruthies perspective on life and reluctance to leave behind the residents of the Providence Retirement Villas is a little frustrating however I found her caring albeit awkward nature to be quite adorable and her obsessive “flaws” such of triple checking locks, procedures and order to be refreshing in a lead character. It was clear from the start that despite multiple warnings, Ruthie was going to fall head over heels for the bad boy Lamborghini that is Theodore or “Teddy” to his friends and long list of female admirers. The cutesy name of Teddy couldn’t be more ironic to the image of the long haired, heavily tattooed man that is described however I’m certain that his tenderness and caring nature towards his new elderly employers will win over even the anti-badboy readers. My favourite characters were definitely the Parloni Sisters, particularly Renata who is the kind of playful, fun and manipulative old lady that I would love to be.

Second first impressions is as a heart-warming, cute and easy to read novel. The kind that makes you feel a little warm and gooey inside, the perfect relaxing read.
